In 2015, a new market hall opened in the Brussels’ Abattoir: Foodmet, a covered market hall where consumers buy meat, fish, poultry, vegetables, fruit, olives, bread, cheeses, spices… in over 50 booths. It’s the only and biggest covered food market in Belgium with a modern architecture.

It’s the place to be in Belgium to find all kinds of multicultural foods from around the world under one roof. Each weekend, more than 100,000 visitors shop at Foodmet’s. In 2018, the next phase of Foodmet will be launched: a new spectacular project of 4,000 m² will open to visitors, of which 2,000 m² consist of greenhouses with heat recovery equipment (generated from cooling installations), whilst 500 m² will be dedicated to aquaculture. There, fish will be farmed, and it will be connected to a much bigger area for hydroculture (microgreens, small fruits and vegetables). The combination of both is called aquaponics. In addition, visitors will get access to the roof garden, a 400 m² restaurant and adjacent rooftop bar.

Abattoir called on the technical expertise and qualitative products of isomasters for the production of the refrigerated areas of the whole Foodmet project.


Production and expedition


The typical concept of Abattoir Foodmet is the supply, processing and expedition of fresh meat.

The refrigerated meat is introduced directly from the nearby Abattoir slaughterhouses through cooled loading quays and transport halls into 17 individual cutting rooms and refrigerators. After further processing, the meat is transferred directly from the ateliers to the butchers’ areas in the back and displayed in modern refrigerated counters, ready to be sold to market visitors. Sales at the Foodmet market is not the only important aspect: multiple traders export their products to other meat and food processing companies.

Besides the 17 meat stalls, 19 refrigerated rooms are provided for storing and processing vegetables and fruit in other locations in the same building.

Insulated sandwich panels

Not less than 7,800 m² of industrial sandwich panels were used for the assembly of the whole project. The IND panels have an insulated PIR core corresponding to a reaction to fire of B-s1,d0. The exterior walls of the refrigerated rooms have a thickness of 120mm, are lightly ribbed and varnished with a HDP 35 µm RAL 7016 coating. Also, the ceiling panels have been executed with a thickness of 120 mm, so all refrigerated rooms as a whole are perfectly insulated. The interior walls and ceiling walls are completely flat for hygienic reasons and equipped with the CLEANsafe 55-coating in RAL 9010, which is 100% appropriate for intensive use in the food industry and for controlled environments.

The IND panels are executed in the 19 stalls of the market, where the walls and ceilings are executed with the Linea Profile (micro-ribbed) in RAL 9005 (black), combined with RAL 7035 (light grey) 

Door solutions

The Abattoir project is divided into a Casco part, where afterwards the different vendors installed their booths. Abattoir only wanted the best materials and most innovative solutions. The isothermal sliding doors that give access to the cutting rooms have been executed with top quality stainless steel C-frames, door edges and rail transit systems, and strong, durable industrial rails ALU250. An absolute top of the line product in the isomasters range and appropriate for intensive use.

The panels and isothermal doors are used very intensively at Abattoir. We know the excellent quality of isomasters materials. The door range is the most complete and simply the best on the market.
